Oct. 5th Meeting

For our October meeting Niki Christopher is going to be doing a presentation on fishing the Gunnison Basin area in Colorado.  It’s an overview of the wide variety of fishing opportunities in the region centered around the towns of Almont and Gunnison, Colorado, on the Western Slope. Included are tips on accommodations, fly shops, eateries and interesting side trips from a fly fisher who has fished the area annually for over a decade.

This is not a “how-to” on techniques, but focuses on descriptions of trout streams and lakes in the area that are accessible to the average angler without long hikes or the need for off-road vehicles. I’ll identify some spots that are easier wading for anglers who aren’t comfortable with fast-water wading, and offer some safety tips for those who are new to high-altitude fishing and driving.

Niki Christopher is originally from Wichita, and moved back last spring after 20 years in Tulsa, Lawrence and Topeka. A lifelong angler, she started flyfishing about eleven years ago. She served as VP of Entertainment, Treasurer and Director of Programs while a member of the Free State Fly Fishers of Lawrence, and is an avid fly-tyer.  Her articles on fly-fishing topics have appeared in Gray’s  Sporting Journal and the Kansas Outdoor Guide.
